THE LEGENDARY JC'S join the line-up

The first one was Rock for Hunger Fest 2 where the co-headlined with Sage Francis. They'll be headlining the second stage at this years event along with another Orlando legend Beth McKee. The Legendary JC's have been rockin the Orlando music scene for many years, and always represent Orlando proud when they hit the road and play at festivals across the country. Their frontman Eugene Snowden, is a dear friend to Rock for Hunger and the Orlando music scene. Most artists would bristle at the term self-indulgent, but Keller Williams often invokes it in describing his own approach to music. To Williams, being self-indulgent means creating music that satisfies him—if he likes what he’s produced, he figures, then his audience is more likely to embrace it too. If he’s not happy with it, why would they be?

And so, when Williams describes his first-ever all-covers collection, the amusingly titled Thief, as “self-indulgent, like all of my albums,” that signifies not an inwardly pointed diss but a thumbs-up from one of the most tireless musical seekers around. Recorded with the Keels—husband and wife duo Larry and Jenny Keel—Thief is a sequel to the trio’s 2006 collaboration Grass, and to those of us on the receiving end, there’s nothing self-indulgent about it. If anything, it’s about as accessible and welcoming a record as Keller’s ever made.

Granted, Thief does require a certain amount of blind faith on the part of the listener: This is, after all, an album that includes songs originally written and recorded by as wildly diverse an assemblage as anyone’s ever likely to dream up, from Amy Winehouse (“Rehab”) to the Grateful Dead (“Mountains of the Moon”), the Butthole Surfers (“Pepper”) to Kris Kristofferson (“Don’t Cuss That Fiddle,” which opens the album, and “The Year 2003 Minus 25,” which closes it). The set is filled out with tunes by Ryan Adams, the Presidents of the United States of America, the Raconteurs, Patterson Hood, Danny Barnes, Cracker, the Yonder Mountain String Band and Marcy Playground. All over the place, yup, but that’s the way Williams likes it. And in his hands it all makes sense—like everything he’s ever touched, whether from his own pen or someone else’s, it all becomes Keller Williams music.

“I’m a music lover first, a musician second and a songwriter third,” Williams says, “so a covers record is a natural progression for me. I love writing songs and I love performing my songs—almost all of them. But I go out and do about 120 shows a year, and I just can’t write enough to play new songs all the time. There are always different cover songs to learn though; just flipping around on the radio, next thing you know you’ve got a song stuck in your head. If you change it around and play it completely differently, it sounds like a whole new song.”

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. Here they underwent a rigorous course of training in a variety of musical instruments, including lap and pedal steel guitars. Born and raised in Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father and grandfather, Rev. Robert E. Lee, was the pastor and a steel player himself.

“Sacred steel” is a type of music described as an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a hard-driving, blues-based beat. The musical genre is rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and ideas from other nations. Influenced by the Hawaiian steel guitar fad of the 1930’s, brothers Willie and Troman Eason brought the electric

lap steel guitar into the worship services of the House of God church in Jacksonville, FL. The Pentecostal congregation embraced the soulful sound, and over time this unique sound became the hallmark of the church. The pedal steel guitar was added to the mix and soon became the central instrument. The Lee Boys are part of the fourth generation of musicians in this

faith.

This music form was totally unknown to the world outside the church until the mid 1990’s, when folklorist Robert Stone attended House of God services and recorded the music, as well as its history, contributing the name “sacred steel.” A series of compilations featuring artists such as Aubrey Ghent, Calvin Cooke and the Campbell Brothers, as well as the late Glenn Lee followed on legendary roots label Arhoolie Records, for whom The Lee Boys also record.

When The Lee Boys bring their joyous spiritual sound to the stage, audiences instantly recognize that this is not “sitting and listening” music: dancing, shouting out, and having fun are considered essential parts of their tradition. Founder and bandleader Alvin Lee explains “The inspiration and feeling that comes along with our music is the reason that people feel good. It is like the new music on the block and it’s just getting ready to explode!” It’s mostly original material, with a few standards and hymns the group “blueses up a little.” Audiences often dance, shout out, and always have a great time. In 2008-09 alone they performed for more than 250,000 music fans at festivals throughout the United States. In the process, their unique sound has attracted musical artists such as Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Michelle Shocked, Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks Band w/ Susan Tedeschi, The North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue, Umphrey’s McGee, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Oteil & Kofi Burbridge, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Toubab Krewe, Victor Wooten, The Del McCoury Band and The Travelin' McCourys– all of whom have played with the Lee Boys and/or invited them to tour with them.

2010 Rock for Hunger Spring Concert

There is nothing out there like Zach Deputy. Truly a one-man band, he is a powerhouse of performance, technical chops, and one hell of a charismatic presence. Put simply, Zach Deputy does what is called live looping: layering sounds through the magic of technology to create a full band effect. He isn’t the only performer out there doing this, but he has taken the technique to the next level. First and foremost, however, Zach Deputy is a songwriter, a shredding guitarist and a soulful singer with a 4+ octave vocal range.

He can also drop freestyle rhymes with the best of them. The Zach Deputy sound is essentially roots rock, but in his case the roots are in soul, calypso and dancehall, underpinned by driving hip-hop, rock steady, Motown and Stax backbeats created with his layered vocal beatboxing. On top of the backbeat, Zach Deputy’s nylon strings pull multiple duties as bass, rhythm and lead guitar. Riding over that, a plethora of sounds– keyboard, steel drums and an entire horn section– come pumping and grinding out of the speakers when Zach takes the stage. He is a one man dance party, but he can also bring an audience to rapt attention with a heartfelt love ballad.

Formed in June 2008, Rival Sons embarked on the Los Angeles music scene in a speedy and addictive frenzy. This heavyweight quartet of rockers melds an eclectic array of American music to synthesize into their own style of rock n roll, which comes across powerfully in their live show.

…and you’ll have an idea of the southern roots music with elements of rock, blues, soul, gospel and country that defines artist Beth McKee.

McKee is a Southern singer/songwriter/pianist/accordion player backed by seasoned musicians from outfits like Hall & Oates, Bellamy Brothers, George Porter, Lester Chambers, etc. A former member of the popular New Orleans country-cajun group Evangeline (MCA Records) McKee toured extensively behind two critically acclaimed albums. L.A. Weekly raved Beth’s piano is “worthy of some Jerry Lee Lewis arson.”

Long before her career took off nationally, the Mississippi native played piano in church. She solidified her southern at Ole Miss. She played blues on the chitlin’ circuit from steamy juke joints to muddy hog farms, and emerged as a respected player on the New Orleans, Austin and Nashville music scenes.

In 2010, the self-released I’m That Way displays all those southern roots fusing to formulate her swampy and soulful musical identity.

Being swampy and soulful, it’s no surprise her first solo release is devoted to the songs of the late Louisiana legend Bobby Charles. As a member of the historic Chess Records roster in the 1950s, Charles wrote and recorded hits like “See You Later Alligator,” “But I Do” and “Walking to New Orleans.” McKee interprets these and Charles' lesser known gems on I’m That Way.

Rock for Hunger Fest is coming into its forth year and the battle for the main stage has entered its final phase. The iRock For Hunger Battle of the Bands Finals will be taking place at BackBooth on Tuesday, September 1st. There are four bands performing trying to take the crown worn by Black Ship Sky last year. The bands will be competing based not only on their musical talents, but also their dedication to the community, the fans they bring and the food they donate, making this a one of a kind event to rock the Orlando community.

Lively hangout? Check.
Absolute affordability? Energetic vibe? Check, and check!

I’m letting you in on the goods about summer concerts happening at Backbooth Bar & Venue located on 37 W. Pine Street in Downtown Orlando. Backbooth houses bands ranging from indie to rock to metal genres and everything in between. Its shows are known to draw great crowds, as well as provide a cool and vibrant listening environment and hangout. This summer, expect nothing but the best variety of bands to rock Backbooth!

With most shows being All Ages or 18+, one of Orlando’s best live music venues welcomes everyone to its shows. Take Solider City Legends for example. These local self-described “post-hardcore” rockers play live on Monday, June 15th. Along with three rock bands- Doubting Benefit, Belson, and Hitman for a Heart, this particular show is sure to be a hit. With their “crisp melodies,” according to decoymusic.com, Soldier City Legends has yet to play a show that hasn’t amped up its fans.

What’s free these days?
Not much- unless you consider the awesome free live music production at Backbooth on June 26th featuring The Attack and How Dare You. This punk rock show, presented by Reax Magazine and Pabst Blue Ribbon, seems to be the perfect start to the weekend. Another band hailing from Orlando, The Attack will have you screaming, jumping, rocking out, (insert other concert-goer verbs here) - if you’re into that kind of thing. Signed to Kiss of Death Records, How Dare You has a catchy sound and lyrics based on their “shitty jobs” according to their MySpace. Don’t miss these guys, as anyone who attends is sure to become a fan fast.

Backbooth will be hosting a July 4th BBQ, providing free beer and food as well as putting on a live show of local favorite and super-catchy Hydrosonic. Rounding out the summer at Backbooth is a Jazz/Funk/Fusion night on July 9th with The Goodrub and The Broken Inn. Expect fun release parties from metal/rock band Empyrean July 24th, self-described indie band Mumpsy on July 31st, and Rouse on August 8th.

There’s never a dull moment at Backbooth, and it only heats up during these summer months. Be sure to check out a show or two, or three. Tight on cash? How would you like to have the chance to play on the main stage at Rock for Hunger Fest 4?

Rock for hunger invites you to be one of the 16 bands to audition for the chance to play at one of the biggest festivals in Orlando. Round one includes four qualifying shows that will take place at the Backbooth on July 12th, July 14th, July 26th and July 28th. For the finalist from each qualifying show Rock for hunger has put together studio time to record one the bands songs for a completion CD that will be sold at Rock For Hunger fest 4. At the final round of the competition the four final bands will be battling for the opportunity to play on the main stage at Rock For Hunger Fest 4. We are looking for bands who not only love music, but believe finding peaceful solution to homelessness, hunger, and poverty in our community. If you are interested please send your bands contact information along with a link to your bands myspace or personal website.

There is and has been a great deal of buzz around this female-fronted band for quite some time. For them to make the trip up from their hometown of Port St. Lucie, Florida is much appreciated. All of us are very excited to see them tear up the second stage.

Greg and I got to hang out backstage, VIP Style, at the House of Blues this past weekend for the Passafire show with Pepper. We got the chance to catch up with them for their pre-Rock for Hunger Fest 3 interview. Passafire will be co-Headlining Rock for Hunger Fest 3 with Kardinal Offishall. They were on the road on the Law Records tour which featured label owners Pepper, and local Orlando label mates The Supervillains.

Passafire is promising a big show for all their fans and Rock for Hunger supporters at Rock for Hunger Fest 3 with some new material of their new album which will be released between Spring and Summer next year. Like I always said, if Incubus ever became a reggae band, they would be Passafire. The following interview is approximately 10 minutes, and totally raw and uncut just for you. Make sure to check them out at The Plaza Theatre on Saturday November 15th at Rock for Hunger 3.

iRock for Hunger Battle of the Bands Finals Results

Last nights inaugural iRock for Hunger Battle of the Bands was unbelievable. It featured three of Orlando’s newest rising bands Black Ship Sky, Johnny Plastic and the Rubber Band, and Pop Suicide. The winner of the competition was decided by whoever had the highest point total from two different categories of points. The first was the giving point system, where bands got points for Fundraising for the cause, food drive items, wearing the shirt, and volunteering their time to the organization. The second point category which was implemented for the final round was the judges portion. The bands were judged on Song writing, Stage Presence, Crowd Participation, Merch Presentation, and promotion.

Pop Suicide started the night of with a fantastic set, but unfortunately came nowhere close to its competition. However, Johnny Plastic and the Rubber Band, and Black Ship Sky were AMAZING!!! Both bands gave their full dedication to the cause raising lots of funds, and brining in a truck load of food. Both bands greatly entertained the crowds with their fantastic performances. It was an extremely close race to the finish in every category. Too bad there can be only one winner, but very great we still have two open slots at Rock for Hunger Fest 3. That’s right, the winner of the Battle of the Bands was promised to open up the main stage at this year’s event, but we never said that hard work will be unrewarded. We reserved an open slot at the Bud Light Stage (2nd Stage) at Rock for Hunger Fest 3 just to see what happened last night. Our committee has decided to have both the winner of last nights competition, BLACK SHIP SKY, and JOHNNY PLASTIC & THE RUBBER BAND at ROCK FOR HUNGER FEST 3. Black Ship Sky won the overall competition with being the leading point leader in the giving category. However, Johnny Plastic & the Rubber Band did have the highest point total in the Judges Category.

For the competitive folks, here are the results from last nights show:

The goal of the concert is to raise funds to build College/Life prep-schools throughout the country, and the world to help kids suffering from less fortunate circumstances to have the opportunity for the same dreams as we have. Hailing out of Savannah, GA, Passafire will come to Orlando, FL to perform at the third annual Rock for Hunger Fest on November 15, 2008 at The Plaza Theatre. This reggae/dub/rock band is featured on Law Records, the record label started by Pepper, which also features Orlando’s The Supervillains.
